4Coleman Sundome offers excellent value...
By CAH
Hello, my wife and I recently returned from a week long camping trip to Florida's panhandle. Our previous tent was a Coleman Outsider that served us well for nearly 10 years, but alas needed replacement since the poles were in rough shape and the tent was patched in a couple spots (we camp several times a year and have even camped through a couple of tropical storms with that tent). For a replacement I decided to buy the Coleman Sundome 6, as it's the closest design to our old Outsider (though just a tad smaller).Upon inspection, on one corner the "inverted seams" was showing a bit of stitching. I covered this spot as best I could with a bit of seam tape (applied to the outside of the tent) as a precaution, but the tape wasn't adhering as well as it should due to application "in the field" while setting up (during a light sprinkle). The rest of the tent looked fine and set up quickly. My wife and I had the tent out of the bag, up and the fly in place within 15 minutes. That first night gave the tent it's greatest test...a strong thunderstorm rolled through with torrential rains and 35mph winds. The tent kept us dry and secure...in fact, it was peaceful laying there listening to the storm. A morning inspection showed that the one questionable corner had leaked a touch, but not much. Total amount of water that leaked in was maybe enough to cover the bottom of a thimble. I was glad to see the tent weathered the storm so well. Here's a tip: the tent comes with light metal pegs which are much better then plastic pegs, but if you expect wind or are setting up on soft ground (such as beach sand), use the longer pegs that look like spikes. These are readily available at any store that sells camping equipment. These longer pegs are stronger and more secure.During the week the tent weathered a few more storms and strong winds (including one that promised hail and thankfully just missed us). We did have to adjust the guy lines now and then to brace the tent against strong winds (adjusting them so that the guy lines were pulling straight against the wind), but the tent held fast and dry all week. The only other water that managed to enter the tent was carried by strong winds up and under the fly, which made the end of our bed slightly damp in one spot. That is the only reason this tent receives 4 stars rather then 5. Our old Outsider's fly extended down a couple of inches lower on the tent. The Sundome's fly is a bit marginal in that regard.Inside, the tent offered plenty of room for my wife and myself, along with much of our gear (airbed, sleeping bags, blankets, suitcases, lanterns, etc). There are 2 mesh pockets on each side of the tent for stowing small items, but be careful not to weigh them down too much or else you can create (what I consider) to be too much of a gap between the tents screen and the fly. The corner opening for an electrical cord is nice. You can zip it snug against the cord and the substantial overlaps offered keep water from leaking in. The peak of the tent offers a spot for hanging a small lantern (though again, watch the weight; I hung a small 6 led lantern there and it was just right. At the back of the tent there is a vent just above the floor. If the night is going to be cool or you're sensitive to drafts, remember to close this flap at night before sleeping (this flap connects to the tent peg via a bungee loop, so to close you simply slip the loop off the peg). On hot nights I'm sure this vent will cool the tent nicely. If you're looking for an affordable, roomy tent that will keep you the Coleman Sundome gets my endorsement!

4Fair Tent for the Money
By Charles
I would describe myself as an avid camper, as I go 2 - 3 times a year. I got married a year and a half ago and had not yet gone camping with my wife as I only had a one man tent. My wife bought this tent for me for Christmas so we could go together and have plenty of room for an air mattress and our stuff. This is a basic straight forward tent. We took it camping for the first time a couple of weeks ago and here are the results:It sets ups very quickly and easily. Mine came with all the guy lines already attached, which makes for quick set up (I did, however, remove all the guy lines and retied the knots in a more secure manner). We had heavy rain and wind gusts up to 20 mph that first night. The rain fly did very well and we had no water intrusion. Despite the deficiencies I will discuss below, this gets huge points because the tent didn't collapse and we stayed completely dry. I did, however, place a tarp underneath the tent despite it having a tarp bottom. It is much easier to clean dirt, mud and grass off a free tarp than the bottom of the tent. (Note about tarps: if the tarp extends beyond the edge of the tent, fold it under so that nothing is protruding. If you don't, when it rains water will collect on the edge of the tarp and run underneath and pool).I did not use the cheap metal stakes that come with this. Another review touted them as better than plastic. That depends on the stake...the stakes that come with this tent are simple 1/4" thick rounded metal shafts approximately 9" in length with a bent hook on the end. The problem with these types of stakes is that as stress is placed on them and they begin to move slightly in the hole, they will rotate and slide up and down. This can cause your guy line to to come loose. Only use this type of stake in rocky soil that will bend or break plastic stakes. Instead, I used 12 Coghlan's 9309 9" Abs Tent Peg (Note: these stakes are a bit tight in the rings at the corners of the tent. It takes some twisting to get them through). They held up just fine in the storm. The paracord-knockoff guy lines are okay, and I will use them until they fail, but true 550 cord would be much stronger and more durable, which you can cheaply replace. The "guy line adjusters" that allow you to adjust the tension on the line are cheap plastic. None of mine failed, but I could see them breaking under extended use. The door is rather small and only on one side, but it is usable. The tent poles are not of the highest grade, but are functional. The tarp bottom is a problem though. Traditionally, these do not hold up well on any tent because the tarp material does not allow for the tight seems that you need for solid tent integrity. after one use, I can already see stress in the stitching. A way to extend the life of the seems before patching is to not pull the corners of the tent quite as taught when you stake it down. Another issue I noticed is that the sides of the tent perpendicular to the door are only mesh on top. The rain fly covers them, so you won't have any water come in. However, since the rain fly only goes down the sides half way, the wind will pass underneath the rain fly flap and go right through the mesh. It was 38 - 40 degrees at night and we could feel the breeze passing through the top of the tent. We were freezing! Great for a warm summer night, not so great in the winter. The carry bag is okay, but I don't expect the zipper to last that long.Overall, not a bad tent for around $100 (we paid $90 for ours) if you are only going camping once a year in warmer climates. I give it 4 stars because it remained watertight in a storm and it is good for the price. If you want something for frequent, heavy, or extended use, go with LL Bean. Granted, you will pay over $400 for a tent this size, but it will last a lifetime.

4Nice Tent
By D. Gasson
worked for our family of four...with space to grow. Was a bit bummed that the front door did not have a full screen door (it only unzips halfway). We have a 4 and 2 1/2 year old and had wanted to be able to see them while they were in there and could not. Overall, good for a basic family tent.
